College Admission Essay: Importance of Explaining Your Choice

Writing a good college admission essay is essential for every applicant. Because the decision to continue one’s education is going to bring many changes into your life, this essay type should emphasize why you’ve made this particular choice.

After so many years of pre-school, middle school and high school, one is finally ready to take one of the most important journeys in one’s life… college. Statistics have shown that only 65 – 70% of those who finished high school continue with their education and go on to college. College, university, post secondary education; they can be called by so many names but they ultimately mean the same thing to everyone: better job opportunities, a better career path, and a better future.

Colleges and universities in the United States are among the world’s top rated institutions. There are institutions that focus on a specific area of study such as vocational, business, or liberal arts. So important and life-changing is a college degree that one should take at least two years to choose and decide the major one will take and the university one will enroll in. Choosing a major takes a lot of practical and personal introspection like, what are one’s interests, what subjects did one excel in during high school, and even what courses are the most lucrative in the current job market. Choosing an institution entails taking into consideration factors like location, total costs, academic programs offered, the best fit college, and even career placement opportunities. There are more than 7,000 colleges, universities and higher education institutions in the U.S. with most of them offering over more than 100 majors or courses of study.

After narrowing down the choices, the admission process begins. At the start of autumn during one’s senior year, one must apply to each of the colleges one has in the list of choices. Admission requirements vary from college to college so one should take the time to contact each and every school to find out their admission prerequisites. Most schools place a lot of emphasis on academic history or background, strong or impressive letter of recommendations, active involvement or participation in extra-curricular activities, and of course, an impressive and engaging college admission essay.

What do college admission experts look for in it? Experts agree that a college admission essay should, at the very least, be one of the following:

  1. The first few lines are attention-grabbers. Since they have to read thousands of essays, admissions staff say those essays that grab their attention in the first lines are the ones engaging to read.
  2. An essay should tell something else about one’s self. It should not include information already stated in the other application forms.
  3. It should be honest and concise. One should not write to impress but to give the school a down-to-earth view of one’s humanity, personality, and character.

Writing Nursing Admission Essay to Become a Dedicated Health Care Worker

The nursing admission essay is a 500-word essay that an admission officer will spend only two minutes to read. Therefore, one should find the best words to stand out within those two minutes.

Health Care and Health Reform has always been a controversial issue. The US is the one nation in the world who spends the most money per person on health care and yet it is also projected to have a shortage on health care workers or a nursing shortage. By the year 2020, it has been projected that the US nursing shortage will reach one million. This shortage is so alarming that the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pooling resources with legislators and the media to address this shortage. Indeed despite the downturn in the economy and the job cuts occurring in all sectors of the economy, the health care sector is unaffected. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has disclosed that 613,000 jobs in the health care sector have been added despite the present recession. To meet this demand, nursing schools should be able to graduate 90% more nurses. So if one is mulling over the possibility of studying to become a nurse, now is the right time to do so.

Those wishing to enroll in a nursing program will find out that the nursing program has its own specific set of prerequisites like high school diploma; satisfactory completion of subjects like calculus, biology, chemistry, and algebra; an overall high school average or GPA of 2.0. One is also required to take the Nursing Entrance Exam and to submit a nursing admission essay.

There are several nursing degrees to choose from, all depending on the area of specialization one wants to focus on. One can choose to study about acute care nursing, infectious disease nursing, oncology nursing, geriatric nursing, pediatric nursing, neonatal nursing, generic or basic nursing, to name a few. Depending on the specialization one chooses, one could then find the best nursing school offering that program.

Working in the health care sector requires a lot of interpersonal skills as one is required to coordinate with doctors and specialists, and to communicate with patients on a daily basis. It is the purpose of the nursing school admission essay to tell the committee that the applicant possesses the necessary interpersonal skills and qualities to become a dedicated health care worker in the future. Simple acts and deeds of compassion and caring should also be expressed in the essay.

Graduate Admission Essay – A Vital Role in Graduate Admission Process

The importance of writing a good graduate admission essay can’t be underestimated. After finishing four years of college, most people feel that they have reached the zenith of their dreams and are ready to set off into the world to make a living. A good percentage of these college graduates, however, choose to further their education and go to graduate schools. There are some who feel that there are still a lot that they need and want to learn about their field of study, others are so inspired by their professors that they hear the calling of becoming a professor as well. It is for these reasons that graduate studies are a good option. Graduate studies or degrees can either be a master’s degree, a PhD or a doctoral degree, or an MBA.

To go into graduate studies, most graduate schools require a Bachelor’s degree (for Doctorate programs, a Master’s degree is required). Applicants are required to submit an official transcript from their university. Depending on the graduate program one wishes to pursue, there are certain tests one needs to take (ex. GMAT for graduate courses in Management, LSAT for law schools, and GRE for graduate courses other than Management). Some schools have set minimums for academic and test scores below which applicants are readily not accepted. One also needs to specify one’s relevant work experience hence, a detailed resume is important. Most graduate schools have their own letter of recommendation form while others have their own set of questions that need to be answered. An interview is of course a common requirement; and last but not least, a graduate school admission essay or statement of purpose (SoP) or letter of intent should be submitted by the applicant.

The grad school admission essay plays a very vital role in the graduate admission process. It is an essay that focuses on the applicant’s career goal, his so-called program of action for achieving these goals, and his current endeavors in the realization of that goal. It is normally 2 to 3 pages long. The graduate admission essay is very crucial especially in doctoral programs in which it can sometimes be the lone factor for admission. It is so critical that 4 to 5 admission officers read an essay and it is then deliberated upon. This essay is the one item in the graduate admission requirements that the applicant has direct control over. It is the applicant’s one shining moment in the spotlight and so needless to say, one must do and show his absolute best before that moment passes by. The main point of the essay is not why the applicant wants to go into that graduate school but why that graduate school should want that applicant.
