MBA Admission Essay – Topics and Rating Scale

Writing a good MBA admission essay is one of the factors which determine the success of your application. MBA or Master’s of Business Administration is a post graduate course that delves on the different areas of business. In the U.S., there are close to 500 business schools accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) which is the standard for business schools. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the number of MBA degrees awarded from the years 1975 to 2000 has jumped by 310%. This statistic only proves that getting an MBA has become a lifestyle.

Most MBA schools follow a scientific method or formula in their admission/selection process. This formula would rely heavily on the following components:

  1. College performance. An MBA applicant would need to have a grade point average between 3 and 4 if one wants to be admitted in the top schools.
  2. Past work experience. Most MBA schools prefer those applicants who have had some type of work experience before going taking their MBA. Work should of course be connected with the MBA major one is applying for.
  3. GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Along with one’s college grades, one’s score in the GMAT are the deciding factors for admission into an MBA program. The GMAT test assesses an applicant’s ability to follow and survive, so to speak, the GMA courses.
  4. MBA admission essay. Usually, one is required to write one or more essays to determine the applicant’s appropriateness for admission into the MBA program one has chosen.
  5. Letter of recommendation. Most MBA schools require one to submit at least two letters of recommendation. The position and stature of those persons giving these letters are of course highly rated.
  6. Interview
  7. Resume

The MBA admission essay is normally based on a given topic. Topics may range from one’s personal success or failure, or one’s career plan. It is the essay’s aim to evaluate or judge an applicant’s maturity, thought process, decision making skills, and personality. It is important that one sticks to the topic without too much digression. The insight that the MBA schools get from one’s essay would determine not only one’s suitability to the MBA program but also one’s potential contribution to that MBA program as well.

An MBA admission essay rating scale would look like this:

Score Rating Description
4 – 5 The essay adequately answers all elements of the essay and utilizes a fitting experience/example for the question at hand.
3 The essay does not completely address the essay and/or the experience/example used is not compelling.
1 – 2 The essay fails to adequately answer a critical portion of the essay and does not use a fitting experience/example for the question at hand.
